April...
Following the triple disasters in Japan, we helped out with a charity event in mid-April at which, amongst other fundraising gimmicks, a number of attendees volunteered to have their heads shaved. Julian didn’t offer on the grounds that what is left might never grow back. He did organise the PA system for the evening, borrowing it from a Japanese speedboat engine salesman who is also a wannabe rock star. So Young contributed large amounts of Korean sushi. The event was successful raising a significant sum towards the Save the Children’s Japan Fund.
We all attended the Lion City Hash Annual General Meeting where Julian, by a combination of inattention and sheer stupidity contrived to be elected Hash Cash (Treasurer) with all the hassle such a role brings. He suspects that there will be little scope for acquiring a Ferrari as the appointees are time-limited to a one year term.
Yasmin (or rather her parents) accepted an invite to Forest Adventure in Bedok Reservoir Park, which involved a number of petrified children being hoisted up into the trees and attached to various ropes. All in the role of building character, of course. It was quite difficult selecting photos where her eyes were not screwed tightly shut...
One outcome of the day was Julian discovering that one can ride a bike (or roller blade or run) from East Coast Park through to Bedok Reservoir Park (pictured with dragon boats in training at lower left) using the cleverly laid out Park Connectors - it’s only a 47 km round trip - and you get to ride with a group of younger, fitter Dads from Yasmin’s school at 7.15 am on a Saturday morning. Wonderful. Must pay more attention.
On 29 April we were glued to the TV for the Royal Wedding along with 2bn other people worldwide, including a lot in Singapore. Actually Julian ran the Friday night Hash in the middle and then watched the highlights accompanied by Ghurkas and bagpipe players at the British Club, whose celebrations featured on both ITN and the Daily Telegraph web site - he didn’t make it into the pictures though.
